10 tips for caring for flowers in autumn

Even if the summer is now behind us, we must not forget about our plants and our beloved flowers, in fact it is precisely in the cold months that you probably need to take greater care of them. The cold has therefore arrived and the first changes in temperature are not good for our home greenery. During the first days with low temperatures, the first to suffer are the plants and flowers. In this article we see a useful decalogue of precautions that can be very useful for keeping them in top shape.

1) Bring the plants indoors

Starting from the month of September it is good practice to bring the most delicate plants back into the house, therefore dedicate yourself to a gradual withdrawal of the plants you keep outdoors. Inside the house they will enjoy a more constant temperature. Autumn mornings and evenings can be much colder than the weather of the day, so it's a good idea to do this as early as possible. Remember to make the move when there is not too much difference between the external and internal temperatures. A sudden shock could harm your flower.

2) Choose the right position

We had already seen it last month very important is the position in which you decide to place a plant. There are some types of flowers that require a protected place, away from direct light, while others that require greater lighting. A good trick that we recommend is to make a plan that reminds you in which position to keep the plants in the house during autumn, so you are on the safe side every year.

3) Perform fertilization

The fertilization phase is certainly one of the tasks to be done in autumn, but it is not mandatory. Many plants are biologically still in autumn and therefore do not need to be fertilized, but there are others that are instead flowering. If, for example, you have at home:
- cyclamens
- heathers
- violets
- ornamental cabbages
- azaleas

Don't forget that they are in full bloom and require fertilization at least 1 or 2 times a month.

4) Autumn repotting

This is a very delicate operation, for true "green thumbs"! When you buy a plant, do so immediately using a larger pot and use a soil rich in nutrients to best face the first months of life. We also advise you to keep a diary in which you note the age of your plants, for younger ones try to repot every 2 years, to prevent the plant from deteriorating due to the impoverishment of the soil. Autumn is an excellent time for repotting as it is, like spring, a season that does not have excessively high or low temperatures. Always remember to repot plants that are not in full growth!

5) Water the plants (always)

Even in autumn, when many plants are "sleeping", remember to never let them lack water. How to adjust? A good rule is to always feel the soil, when it appears too dry it is a good idea to proceed with a new dose of water. A problem for those who have flowers in their apartment during the autumn season is the excessively dry environment created by heating the radiators. To overcome this, simply place containers of water near them to make the environment humidified.

6) Observation

Always remember to observe your flowers and plants, by carefully monitoring the color of their leaves you will be able to obtain many useful indications on their state of health. In fact, you will be able to understand whether it is necessary to integrate some substances into the soil or simply increase irrigation.

7) Clean the plants

The leaves of the flowers must be kept clean, in fact during their stay in the house in the autumn season they can become dusty. Cleaning the plants is important as the dust forms a barrier between the leaves and the light with the result of significantly weakening the plants. Clean the leaves with a damp cloth, always keeping a hand under them. The operation must be done delicately and with great care. When the surface of the leaves is large, cleaning must be very frequent, at least every 10-15 days dedicated to eliminating dust. For plants with small leaves you can use a spray vaporizer, preferably with water at room temperature.

8) Use non-calcareous water

This is helpful advice for all seasons, not just fall. Prefer non-calcareous water to water or clean your flowers, in the plant universe an excess of limestone can lead to a weakening of the plant. Chlorosis is in fact a physiopathy that results from the use of water that is too calcareous which, by preventing the absorption of iron, is quite harmful to your plants. To obtain non-calcareous water you can collect rainwater or use water from dehumidifiers or, if you want to be even more "green" use water from boiling pasta.

9) Keep a diary

Try to write down all the interventions you make in a diary dedicated to your flowers so, season after season, you will know exactly what interventions you have made on your plants. In this way it will be easier for you to monitor and understand which actions were successful, and therefore should be repeated, and which should be avoided. Keeping track of all the interventions made especially helps those who are beginners to create a useful handbook.

10) Sip tea and enjoy your flowers

After so much work and commitment, try to carve out some time for yourself, on gloomy autumn weekends treat yourself to a tea, herbal tea or whatever drink you prefer and observe your plants. Contemplating flowers is an excellent anti-stress, let yourself be captured by their scents and colors.

Here we are at the end of our guide, we hope that these tips relating to flower care in autumn have been useful to you, if you want to increase your floral collection, in our catalogue you will find a wide selection of flowers and plants, even during the autumn period!
